My dearest grandmother is a person I have the most precious place in my heart for. She has taught me much and also has been the most significant influence to my life.
She was not a rich lady. Having been a housewife all her life, and managing with an income just enough to make ends meet, she did not have the means to buy us – her grandchildren – expensive gifts.
But on every birthday and at Christmas, it was her gift that her four granddaughters always waited for, as we were sure it would be a unique one, wrapped with love.

One Christmas our eyes nearly popped out as we were handed over four beautiful dolls dressed in clothes too intricate to describe. I got the one dressed as a bride! This was significant as I had just taken part in a school play as a bride doll.
I knew how many hours of hard work she must have put in to make these dolls for us. From the curls in their hair to the sequins on the shoes, it was all designed by her.

It’s been a long time since that Christmas, but the doll still sits proudly in my room, reminding me of a labor of love and most of all that gifts don’t have to be branded and expensive as long as they come from the heart with love.
